Mehmet AKYUZ | Davitap Engineering Defense Medical Industry and Trade Inc.

Tell us about yourself?

Of course. I live in Ankara, Turkey. I am the founder and manager of Davitap Engineering. My expertise is in chemical technologies. With my R&D background of nearly 14 years, I gained experience in Fuel Cells, Hydrogen Technologies, and Plasma Processes. With the experience I gained, I had the opportunity to improve myself not only in the field of chemistry but also in mechanics and processes. I took part in national and international R&D projects. My work is generally technology development activities.

Advanced technologies have always fascinated me. For this reason, contributing to the development of technology infrastructures that can be done today and in the future increases my motivation.

What do you think is the single biggest misconception people have when it comes to startups?

Fast money-making. Today, startups are focusing on getting cash faster. The biggest reason for this is social media and virtual environments. We try to get everything we see. And it rarely is achieved that way. There is very serious money circulating in virtual channels. such as cryptocurrency, stock market, even bets.

This may be related to the geography I live in, but I believe you have to work, put in the effort, and truly deserve it. The way to do this is not in virtual channels. If you are a scientist, the way to do this is the laboratory. We must make very good feasibility of the structure or technology you will put forward, and even do research on intellectual property rights. And we must first believe in ourselves honestly. Then we have to work patiently, develop and turn it into a product.

If you could go back in time to any moment from your journey, and give yourself one tip, what would it be?

Yes, there is such a moment. But this is all about the technology I’m working on right now and I can’t give any information about it. But I can say this; I spent 3 years with this academic knowledge mistake. I thought I wouldn’t have development work, that I was just slacking off.

What makes you stand out as an entrepreneur?

I am very confident in my ability to think analytically and practically. And I try to do my job well. I always take care to prioritise my company (Davitap), including myself, especially by adhering to the technology infrastructure we have developed.

What are some of the best working habits you’ve gained over the past couple of years?

My R&D and business development potential were always high. When I gain experience, I am very confident not only in my field of expertise but also in the laboratory environment or in soft environments, especially in the field of process development.

But especially after installing Davitap, I am also trying to improve in the managerial position. I focus on brand equity, customer or user relationships. I actually get sociological feedback about my work. Do people need me or Davitap? I can say that I have gained this perspective recently.

Give us a bit of an insight into the influences behind the company?

Davitap was originally founded to operate in the field of advanced technologies. We are working on “Plasma Processes and Molecular Relations” among advanced technologies. Today, plasma is already used in many sectors or fields of activity, albeit partially. But the potential is very high. It plays a role in many main sectors such as defense, industry, space industry, energy, and medicine. Although it comes to the fore as auxiliary equipment in some production lines today, it has reactions that can serve as the main component especially in the fields of the space industry, medicine and energy.

As Davitap, we also concentrate on the medical field. With Plasma Processes, we want to benefit human health without pharmacological factors. We are also working on development in this direction. In addition, we continue our development studies in the defense industry, especially as an auxiliary unit in equipment.

We cooperate with very important public institutions such as Tübitak, Ankara University/Microbiology Department, TAI (TUSAŞ), Kosgeb in Turkey. The most important product we have developed is “A medical device that provides local treatment of upper and lower respiratory tract diseases with cold plasma process and endoscopic method.”

Our team consists of 6 R&D Engineers. Having qualifications such as Mechanical Engineer, Physics Engineer, Electrical-Electronics Engineer, Biomedical Engineer. In addition, we receive consultancy services from our schools, organisations within the scope of service procurement, and relevant universities.

Where do you see your business in five years?

I will have created a product whose clinical process has been completed and which can provide the treatment of an important cancer disease. Therefore, we will probably be developing business with our international business partners.

What do you think the biggest challenge will be for you in getting there?

The biggest challenge of R&D is costs. Because if you actually do a job and develop it in an original way, your costs will increase. However, we believe that we can handle this process both with our own resources and with investment opportunities.

Talk to us about your biggest success story so far?

1- To develop devices with an endoscopic method for upper and lower respiratory tract diseases. It was created with a complex engineering approach.

2- Establishing Davitap’s company

How do clients and customers find you? Are you much of a salesperson for yourself?

In general, they can find us through internet searches about technology and their needs. However, we also communicate with businesses that we think we can find solutions for. Also the most important point: as the entire R&D team, we receive continuous customer or user-oriented feedback in the field.

According to my weekly schedule, I take care to make my customer interviews (except in special cases).

What one tip would you give to fellow startup founders?

Do not limit your imagination. Increase brand value. Don’t just think about cash. Focus on the economic benefit your customers need. This will reveal the value of your product.

And finally, what do you hope the future brings both you personally, and your business?

Respect and scientific popularity.

We are growing Davitap with this principle. We have very large and active competitors, especially in the sectors we work in. We respect all of them. However, we know that we will be one of the cornerstones of “Plasma Processes”, which is seen as the technology of the future. For this reason, our most important goal is to increase our activities as much as possible and to improve ourselves in the international arena.
