Can you share your journey leading to the founding of Waverly and how your previous experiences have shaped its mission?

My journey to founding Waverly was heavily influenced by my experiences, especially during my time at Element AI as a founder and Google as a founding engineer of the Chrome machine learning team. It was at Google that I crossed paths with Tristan Harris, a technology ethicist, and together we recognized the issues caused by algorithms designed by social media companies, as depicted in the Netflix documentary ‘The Social Dilemma.’

The problem we identified was how these algorithms often steered users towards attention-grabbing, yet shallow content. Working on recommender systems at Google made me aware of how easily these algorithms could distract and divert attention away from users’ goals. I saw a need for technology that could empower users to take control of their attention and maintain focus.

These insights and concerns became the driving force behind the creation of Waverly. We empower users to take control of their feeds by simply chatting with our AI. By expressing their preferences and interests, users and communities can customize their algorithms and ensure that the content they see truly reflects their unique preferences. This commitment to user control and transparency is at the heart of our platform, and we believe it’s a crucial step towards creating a more fulfilling and supportive online community.

Unique Approach to Social Media: Waverly aims to revolutionize the social media landscape with a focus on user control and meaningful connections. What inspired you to prioritize these values in your platform’s design?

We’re all familiar with the feeling of getting lost in the endless scroll of social media, only to realize hours later that we’ve accomplished nothing and feel disconnected from what truly matters. It doesn’t have to be that way. That’s why we’re committed to creating a platform where users have the power to shape their online experiences in a way that truly aligns with their values and interests.

At Waverly, we believe that social media should be a tool to enhance our lives, not a distraction that detracts from it. We want to foster an online community where users feel respected and valued, and where genuine connections can thrive. By prioritizing user control and meaningful connections, we hope to create a social media experience that enriches lives and fosters a sense of belonging and purpose.

Challenges and Innovations: In creating a social media platform that diverges from the algorithm-driven models of today, what have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced, and how have you addressed them?

Developing a sustainable business model without compromising our values of user privacy and control will be challenging. Traditional social media platforms leverage user data to monetize their attention in a way that’s often not desired by people. We want to stay away from these practices.

Relying less on addictive algorithms that optimize for engagement through endless scrolling and notifications poses a challenge for maintaining high levels of user engagement and retention. We need to find new ways to keep users interested and active on the platform without resorting to manipulative tactics.

Navigating these challenges has required innovative thinking and a commitment to our core values. By focusing on user empowerment, community engagement, and ethical monetization, Waverly is pioneering a new path in social media. We believe that by addressing these challenges head-on, we can create a platform that not only respects user autonomy and privacy but also fosters a more connected, engaged, and healthy digital community.

Future Vision: Where do you see Waverly in the next five years, and what steps are you taking to achieve this vision?

Our vision for Waverly is to set a new standard for social media. We aim to create a platform where user control, transparency, and honesty exists. This means giving users a say in their experience, and fostering an environment where they feel safe, supported, and empowered.

We believe that providing users with unparalleled control over their experience fosters a sense of ownership and loyalty, critical for our growth and sustainability.
